Las Vegas Entertainer Danny Gans Dies

LAS VEGAS, May 1, 2009 – Las Vegas legend Danny Gans, headliner at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, passed away last night at his home in Henderson, Nevada. He was 52 years old. At this time, his cause of death is unknown.

Steve Wynn commented: "Elaine and I and all of us in the Company are devastated at the loss of our brilliant, talented and loving friend. One of the most unique human beings and entertainers in the world has been taken from us in an unexpected moment. A profoundly tragic event that leaves us all sad and speechless. The loss of Danny to his wife Julie, his children Amy, Andrew and Emily is at this moment impossible to comprehend. We will all try to go on with our lives without our dear friend. At this moment it seems almost impossible."

Known as the Man of Many Voices, Gans was named Entertainer of the Year for 12 years in a row in Las Vegas. On top of his record-breaking crowds and consistently sold out shows, Gans has been showered with accolades and awards throughout his performing career.

In February of 2009, Gans debuted his award-winning show at the new Encore Theater. Prior to his engagement at Encore, Gans spent eight years performing in his own 1,250-seat theater at the Mirage, which Steve Wynn originally built for Gans.

Gans began performing in Las Vegas at The Stratosphere and The Rio after 15 years traveling throughout the U.S., working at his craft and perfecting his repertoire of impressions. He became one of the most sought-after performers in the prestigious corporate world, often playing to stadium-sized crowds for major, international companies such as IBM and McDonald’s, and was the favorite of the Fortune 500 list.

In 1995 Danny was starring on Broadway in his one-man show and performing 200 concert dates a year. When the opportunity presented itself, Gans chose to move his show to Las Vegas where he could settle down to a life with his family.

Gans hadn’t planned to be an entertainer. His boyhood dream was to play third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers and, after high school, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals. The Chicago White Sox drafted Gans after college, where he was an All American at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Two years later, his life-long dream came true as he signed that contract and went to the minor leagues to start his career as a professional athlete. Not long after, a career-ending injury turned his life upside-down.

With love and encouragement from his friends and family, Gans shifted his focus from baseball to entertainment. He was blessed with a marvelous singing voice, the ability to make people laugh and a rare presence that would manifest itself throughout his career.

Danny Gans’ Manager Chip Lightman commented: "Danny Gans will not only be remembered as a Las Vegas entertainer, but as a man who loved his family, loved God and loved the city of Las Vegas. Danny has been my partner and dear friend for over 18 years. I will truly miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife of 28 years, Julie, and his three children, Amy, Andrew and Emily."

Treasure Island sold to Phil Ruffin

The former owner of the now defunct New Frontier Hotel, has purchased Treasure Island Hotel and Casino from MGM/Mirage for $775 million. Flush with $1.2 billion from the May 2007 sale of the Frontier to the New York based Elad group, Ruffin is back in the Vegas game once more.

Treasure Island opened in the mid 1990’s by Steve Wynn. TI as it is now known, is the family themed extension Hotel to the Mirage, also developed by Steve Wynn. Recently TI has shed it’s family themes and is now a busy mid-priced Hotel catering to Adults.

Wynn Resorts, the former owner of Treasure Island was forced to sell to Kirk Kerkorian’s  MGM company in the late 1990’s after Wynn ran into suspicious difficulties with financing and licensing for projects in Louisiana and New Jersey. It is this author’s opinion Wynn was intentionally sacked to force the sale of his Hotels and the Mirage Resorts Corporation to Kerkorian.

MGM/Mirage of late has seen it’s stock price drop over 90% partly as a result of Kirk Kerkorian selling shares to cover margin calls connected to his attempt to control the automaker Ford. The infusion of $775 had a positive impact initially on MGM/Mirage with shares rising over 7% in early trading Monday.

Phil Ruffin also owns the seven acres of land that houses the $1.2 billion Trump International Hotel & Tower. He is considered a part owner in the 1,282-unit hotel and condominium tower with New York billionaire Donald Trump. Sadly this project has been a huge failure and sits likely 90% vacant and unsold. Trump stock has fallen 95% in 2008, ouch!

New Mirage Hotel Volcano attraction opens.

The Mirage once again set the standard for Strip-front attractions today as its redesigned signature Volcano premiered to the world. When The Mirage first unveiled The Volcano in 1989 the landscape of Las Vegas was forever altered. This all-new audio/visual spectacle again raises the bar with never-before-seen fire effects and an exclusive soundtrack composed by Grateful Dead drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Mickey Hart, and Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain.

Celebrity impressionist, singer, comedian, ventriloquist and soon-to-be Mirage headliner Terry Fator acted as Master of Ceremonies for the historic reignition, which took place on the Las Vegas Strip at dusk. Fator was joined on stage by Grammy Award-winner Hart, as well as Mirage President Scott Sibella and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. Following the inaugural eruption, the Las Vegas sky was lit with celebratory fireworks from the top of The Volcano.

The new Volcano is the crowning jewel in a transformation project that began at the property in 2006. During the past three years, The Mirage has introduced new amenities including The Beatles’ LOVE™ by Cirque du Soleil, nightlife outposts JET Nightclub and The Beatles Revolution Lounge; the luxury adult pool BARE, and restaurants created by the world’s most acclaimed restaurateurs and designers. A recent $110 million room and suite redesign has further enhanced The Mirage’s leading-edge position.

“Technology and the Las Vegas Strip have come a long way since 1989, making for an increasingly competitive tourism market,” said Sibella. “With tonight’s rebirth of our Volcano the exterior of the resort reflects the energy and excitement found within the new Mirage.”
