Treasure Island sold to Phil Ruffin

The former owner of the now defunct New Frontier Hotel, has purchased Treasure Island Hotel and Casino from MGM/Mirage for $775 million. Flush with $1.2 billion from the May 2007 sale of the Frontier to the New York based Elad group, Ruffin is back in the Vegas game once more.

Treasure Island opened in the mid 1990’s by Steve Wynn. TI as it is now known, is the family themed extension Hotel to the Mirage, also developed by Steve Wynn. Recently TI has shed it’s family themes and is now a busy mid-priced Hotel catering to Adults.

Wynn Resorts, the former owner of Treasure Island was forced to sell to Kirk Kerkorian’s  MGM company in the late 1990’s after Wynn ran into suspicious difficulties with financing and licensing for projects in Louisiana and New Jersey. It is this author’s opinion Wynn was intentionally sacked to force the sale of his Hotels and the Mirage Resorts Corporation to Kerkorian.

MGM/Mirage of late has seen it’s stock price drop over 90% partly as a result of Kirk Kerkorian selling shares to cover margin calls connected to his attempt to control the automaker Ford. The infusion of $775 had a positive impact initially on MGM/Mirage with shares rising over 7% in early trading Monday.

Phil Ruffin also owns the seven acres of land that houses the $1.2 billion Trump International Hotel & Tower. He is considered a part owner in the 1,282-unit hotel and condominium tower with New York billionaire Donald Trump. Sadly this project has been a huge failure and sits likely 90% vacant and unsold. Trump stock has fallen 95% in 2008, ouch!

Taxi Staging for Fun and Profit

PICT0579

Anybody who has ever been to Las Vegas can attest to the fact there are a ton of taxis on the Strip. The taxi staging lines wrap around most strip Hotels day and night. Ask any taxi driver and they will tell you there is far more taxis than business to support.

Why do they need so many taxis? Seems like a waste of resources to have so many drivers idle? so many taxis polluting the air? Most people would also agree a taxi, with all it’s flashy advertising, is an eyesore. Clear Channel TaxiMedia would beg to differ.

Could this practice of oversupplying taxis, creating long lines of what are really advertising signs be intentional? Could Advertisers be working to flood streets with taxis to benefit their advertising business? at the expense of taxi drivers by increased competition for a finite number of rides?

According to this insightful article the practice is likely a tactical strategy which increases advertising exposure, in the trade that means eyeballs.

Strategic static taxi staging has been perfected in Las Vegas. In other locales like New York, the sheer number of taxis creates a different form of ad saturation. NYC has 10 times the number of taxis than Las Vegas.

The important thing to understand with advertising is ads only work when people see them. In Las Vegas the Hotels are providing a perfect vehicle for these Advertisers at no cost. Clear Channel is basically getting free ad space on some of the most expensive Real Estate on the planet by showing ads on staging taxis.

When does TA remove the Gas Surcharge?

RJ Letters to Editor

source link: RJ Letters to Editor

Dear Editor,

The Taxicab Authority, whose responsibility is to protect the interests of the general public, has once again proven that the only interests they are interested in protecting are those of the 16 existing cab companies. At the June meeting the TA Board approved a 25 cents per mile fuel surcharge on top of a 20 cents per mile permanent increase. Taxi fares went from $2.20 per mile to $2.65 per mile. At the time this was reasonable as gasoline was approaching $4.25 per gallon. In the order issued by the TA Board the TA Administrator, Mr. Gordon Walker, was given authority to remove the fuel surcharge if gasoline prices fell below $4.00 for 20 consecutive days. On or about July 28 the price of gasoline fell below $4.00 per gallon and has steadily fallen to where it is now at $3.50 per gallon. We are now at 60 days below $4.00 per gallon and Mr. Walker, at the request of the cab companies, has not yet removed the fuel surcharge.

Governor Gibbons has been adamant about no new taxes since taking office and during the current and ongoing state budget crisis. The Governor has vowed to veto any bill that raises taxes on businesses or individuals in these tough economic times. So where does the Governor stand on this ongoing fleecing of the public for the benefit of the existing cab companies? If the Governor has any integrity, he will fire Mr. Walker and appoint an administrator that will not bend over backwards to fulfill the wishes of the cab companies. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen, as 12 of the existing cab companies donated from $5,000 – $10,000 to the Governor’s 2006 election campaign. Will Gov. Gibbons look out for the interests of the public or his friends with deep pockets?

The Great Limousine War of 2000! (vintage)

State of Nevada Department of Business and Industry Transportation
Services Authority,” sounds pretty impressive doesn’t it? Such an important
sounding organization seems out of place being described in the Thursday,
November 4, 1999 Review Journal editorial “Legalize limousine business” as
a “protection racket” disguised as a state regulatory agency.

There is much more to the story than what the RJ revealed in their
insightful editorial. The Washington-based Institute for Justice is pursuing a
lawsuit against the TSA for restriction of fair trade and anti trust activities.

This corrupt story has a long history in Nevada politics. Nevada is one
of only three remaining states that harbors the unjust “Adverse Impact
Law” designed to protect moneyed interests from competition. This law only
applies to chosen industries including taxicabs, limousines, tow trucks,
ambulances, furniture movers, hospitals, and cable television.

Local Executive Director of CAIR, vs. Trip Sheet’s Gloria Rich

For those who don’t know, Trip Sheet is the monthly local Cabbie Industry Magazine here in Las Vegas. Rich is one of their regular Columnists.

Rich in the December 2007 issue of TS said this:……………….

>>Run Muslim, Run!

Whoever would have thought we would have a Muslim running for President a few years after 9-1 1-0 l ? Obama has said he hasn’t decided whether or not he will be sworn in on the Koran. To do so will assure it is the first time ever. What disturbs me is that the nature of the Islamic religion is to take precedent over politics and therefore not only is emotion involved, but blind faith! Look at the damage the fanatic Muslims have already done! You don’t hear too much about his Muslim affiliation lately. Google Obama. That’s where I found this info.

Incidentally, found a news item that also noticed how when the National Anthem is played, Obama does not put his hand over his heart, as he is supposed to do, but looks around aimlessly. Don’t we have enough candidates for President without selecting this guy because he has “charisma”? One exotic candidate per election is my mantra and that position is filled by Hillary. You have to do research and read for yourself and make up your own mind. <<
