However, the van driver (a foreigner) chose the most circuitous route….

Date of Occurrence:    11/13/07

Time of Occurrence:    Approx. 5:00 p.m.

Location of Occurrence:     McCarron to Stratosphere

Comments:
When I arrived in Las Vegas late on the afternoon of 11/13, I took a Vegas Western Cab Co van #6166 from McCarron airport to the Stratosphere. I have been to Las Vegas on numerous prior occasions, and am familiar with how to get around town. I have driven in Las Vegas enough times to know that Paradise Blvd. is a good way to avoid the get from the south end of the strip to the north end and avoid the normal strip traffic. However, the van driver (a foreigner) chose the most circuitous route….215 to 15, then off at Tropicana, up Industrial Blvd. and finally a few back streets to the Stratosphere. Upon arriving at the Stratosphere, the fare was $32.50. Granted that several accidents on 15 at Sahara and Flamingo had traffic backed up, that would not have been an issue had the driver taken the most direct route. This was a rip-off, plain and simple. Your Authority should be more careful in licensing foreigners who chose to prey upon the visitors to your city. I am quite certain that the Stratosphere would much rather have had my money….and I would have much preferred to give it to them…at least I would have gotten the pleasure of losing it willingly. When I complained that the driver had taken the longest possible way from the airport, and that taking Paradise Blvd. would have taken half as long (if not more), the driver’s response was that “Paradise is closed for construction”. Well, it just so happens that I had to take a cab today (11/14) for a meeting and low and behold, Paradise Blvd. looked pretty drivable. Either the van driver was lying, or the public works people in Vegas should be commended for getting road construction done so quickly.

Location of Occurrence:     Monte Carlo to Howard Johnson

Comments:
Hello my name is Jason, on my recent trip to Las Vegas we had a terrible cab ride. He was lost, took wrong turns, pulled over asked for directions, talking on the phone while traffic lights turned form red to green (once green he waited 45 sec. before moving) and all this while our meter was running. Then to top it off he refused to give as change from a far unreasonable fare of $ 24.10. I agree to pay the high fare only because we were running late for a wedding. All I wanted at the time was my change, but he refused, only have arguing with him he gave me about 80 cents back. We had many friends come from the strip at the same time with fares from $ 11 to $ 15 far less then our $ 24.10. We came from the Monte Carlo and the destination was 1400 Howard Johnson on the strip. Yes we gave him the address on Las Vegas Blvd, but yet couldn’t find it. The cab company was the North Las Vegas Cab Company and the cab was # 4642. Please don’t let this happen to any other families. Thank You.

It appeared to us that he was taking us to the desert. My wife had already run out of the cab!

Date of Occurrence:    11/04/07

Time of Occurrence:    9:30PM

Location of Occurrence:     Suncoast Casino to RIO Casino

Comments:
My wife and I entered a non-descriptive taxi (we can only remember the word TAXI on the cab. The doorman at the Suncoast had told us that a cab could cost as much as $40 to go to the RIO. Because Debbie Reynolds was appearing in the showroom that night, there were not enough cabs for all the people who wanted to take a taxi. This cab pulled up on the side and we went into it without a doorman’s help. The driver who had an accent (maybe arab or spanish) was whispering into a cell phone for the entire trip. It had taken us about 10 minutes to get to the Suncoast from the strip, so I was surprised that the trip was passing 25 minutes and the meter climbed past $70. We were on a High speed Highway and moving very fast. We seemed to be west of the Strip but further west then the Hwy US15 that paralells the Strip. Plus we never passed the RIO, I became very concerned when in the distance I could see the South Point Casino that I knew was south of the strip as we were passing on the far left. I asked the driver where was he going that he passed the RIO? He said that the exit was closed and he was taken another way. We proceeded to go south and an alarming speed. My wife got upset when she saw a sign that said Los Angeles straight ahead. Being a State Investigator for 23 years, I told her to get on the cell phone and call the police. When the driver heard the word police, he made an immediate U-turn and was taking in broken english that he would shut off the meter which was at about $76. The driver took us to the RIO and I handed him $40 with a two dollar tip. He held on to the money and told me the fare was $110. I told he that I did not want to argue with him and that I felt that something was very wrong here. If he did not want to accept the $42 then we will call the police and if they say I have to pay this amount, I will. The driver would not let go of the money and told me to get out of the cab(my wife had already run out of the cab) and close the door. I let go of the money, closed the door and he sped off at a high rate of speed. We filed a report with the Casino Host at the Rio. The driver who was thin, looked arab or mexican had a taxi license number on the dashboard of his cab that read: #576 in a black marker handwritten style. My wife took his license plate number that was: 103 TYX. We feel that he was up to no good. We feared for our lives. It appeared to us that he was taking us to the desert.

You make complaint you need coroner too!

Location of Occurrence:     8601 South Las Vegas Blvd

Cab Company: Ace Cab Co Cab number: 6553 License plate number : 213RNZ Driver Information: Name: Osman, Bouh License number : I arrived in Las Vegas on Southwest flight #446 on Monday November 19, 2007 at approximately 10:35 pm. After claiming my bag I got the cab described above and instructed him to take me to World Mark at 8601 South Las Vegas Blvd. By surface streets a distance of less than six miles. The cab driver, however, stated he knew the way and then went through the tunnel, got on the freeway and went way down the freeway and doubled back to South Las Vegas Blvd running the fare up to $17.70 when we stopped in front of World Mark. He shut off the meter so quickly if I had not been watching I would not have known what the fare was. I knew I was been cheated, so as we approached World Mark I told him so and that I intended to take his license number and report him. He became very hostile, shouting at the top of his voice, heavily accented so I did not understand all he was saying except, “you make complaint you need coroner too!”. As he was getting by bag from the back of the van I got out and open the front passenger door to look at his license. As I was doing so he he then gabbed the door trying to prevent me getting in the front seat. I managed to overcome his resistance. I took hold of the license to record his information all the while the driver kept trying to pull the license from my hand or cover the information with his hand and yelling all the time. Then we argued about the fare, I told him $17.70 was to high, he said the fare was not that but $19.00. I said I saw the meter and it was $17.70, he said no it was$19.00. He would not move, he was hateful and angry. I was trapped in the front passenger seat. I opened my purse and then my wallet to get some money. As I was reaching to get a twenty dollar bill and bringing it out of my wallet the driver grabbed the twenty from my hand, gave me a dollar bill, pulled me from the seat, slammed the door, walked around the front of the van, got in and drove away.

He actually pulled out a map and stopped in the middle of the road and pretended to read it.

Star Cab- Driver Getnet Getham (Spelling may be off?) Black Male Adult, black hair, brown eyes, skinny. He picked 4 of us up at the Las Vegas airport at approximately 1000-1015 hours on December 1, 2007. He was instructed to take us to the Sports Complex located at 121 E. Sunset Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89119. This location is 3 miles from the airport. The Taxi Driver pretended he did not know where Sunset Rd. was and took the scenic route all the way to Pecos Rd and then back up to Sunset which ended up costing us $29.00 in cab fare. He actually pulled out a map and stopped in the middle of the road and pretended to read it. I am filing this complaint because it was obvious he was lying to us and made us late for a very important Grappling match that was prepaid for. If an honest taxi driver had driven us, we would have made the match with plenty of time to spare as the drive was only 3 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT.

He outright cheated us and certainly ruined the mood of our first night.

Date of Occurrence:    Nov. 24, 2007

Time of Occurrence:    9:45 PM

Location of Occurrence:     McCarran Airport

Comments:
My wife and I arrived on a flight from Canada at McCarran Airport at about 9:30 PM on Saturday, November 24, 2007. We have been to your city many times in the past, in fact this was our fifth trip there this year. I’m not a local but I do know my way around Las Vegas. After collecting our bags we proceeded to the taxi stand outside the airport doors. We were staying at Circus Circus Hotel this trip, where we have stayed a few times before. We got in the next cab up and it was a Nellis cab number 685. Our driver was a rather large white male, mid thirties. I told him Circus Circus and he said no problem and took off. Every cab I have ever taken has gone North on Paradise, this guy went south and through the airport tunnel. I asked where he was taking us and he said the highway. When he turned West on 215 I said again that this was not the way and his reply was that the highway was much quicker. We were starting to get worried that perhaps this was a robbery or worse. When he turned North on 15 I told him we wanted to go straight to our hotel. By this time my wife was sitting in silence. The driver then turned East on Tropicana and started heading back to the Strip. I told him to just get on Industrial and go to the back of the hotel. At this point he gave up trying to convince me and became quiet. I never truly relaxed until we were in the parkade, at which point I told him he missed Fremont but seemed to have taken us everywhere else. He had no reply. The fare was $27.30 which is ridiculous for a trip from the Airport. I wrote down the number of the cab and paid him off, in dimes, exact change. This was the first bad experience I have had in many trips. This man should not be driving in Las Vegas and greeting tourists. He outright cheated us and certainly ruined the mood of our first night. I enjoy coming to your town for a holiday and I always leave a fair amount of money behind, that’s part of the experience but I really dislike being taken advantage of. Please keep me informed as to the progress and resolution of this matter. We are coming back in February and could sign an affidavit then if you require

He had his photo ID covered by thank you for not smoking sign.

Date of Occurrence:    12/9/07

Time of Occurrence:    Approximately 1:30PM

Location of Occurrence:     McCarran Airport

Comments:
I waited under the # parking sign that I was told to by the Airport Traffic staff. A cab pulled up, saw me (one person only), and backed up to take the couple behind me. A traffic officer blew his whistle and told him to move forward and take me in proper order. He asked me how I wanted to get to the Paris Hotel. I responded “the quickest way.” I don’t know what other response there could possibly be. He said not one word to me after that. And took me the long way thru the tunnel costing me $22.00 plus a tip. He had his photo ID covered by a “thank you for not smoking” sign. Aren’t they supposed to have that uncovered? That alarmed me. When we got to the hotel he took out my bag, left it on the ground and left w/0 a word. The cab was a Star and the # was 2010. He appeared to be a white male with an Eastern European accent when he spoke that one time. Next time I will refuse to get in a cab with someone who did not want to take only one person. And especially if he has his name covered up.

Las Vegas depends on its’ tourists and we feel ripped-off

Date of Occurrence:    Dec. 21/07

Time of Occurrence:    7:00 am

Location of Occurrence:     Treasure Island to McCarran Airport

Comments:
We took a cab #585 – which was a Nellis Cab with phone # 248-1111 on it. This cab driver proceeded to take us from Treasure Island to the Airport via I15 and the tunnel in spite of our telling him that this is not the way we normally come in or leave. Because of this, our fare was almost $26.00 instead of the usual $13 to $15 we normally pay. We’ve heard stories about this happening to others but it was never our experience before this trip. We think this is disgusting after all Las Vegas depends on its’ tourists and we feel ripped-off. This practice should be stopped.

It put a very sour note on my family’s start to our Xmas holiday

Date of Occurrence:    12/14/07

Time of Occurrence:    19:30

Location of Occurrence:     Pickup from Airport, dropoff at Caesars Palace

Comments:
Having been to Las Vegas many many times before, I know the route from the airport and the price it should be. However, on this instance I was taken the I-15 route and it cost me just over $25. In comparison I have never paid more than $13. The strip was dead and there would have been no problem with Swenson either. Yet the driver took us via the Tunnel then the I15. It put a very sour note on my familys start to our Xmas holiday. The cab was a van number 158 with Western. I do not have the guys name as I sat in the backrow and just wanted to get as far away from him when we arrived at Caesars but he was late 30s/40s, rall, slim with a moustache. Ripping off tourists is a disgrace. I only saw 1 other can the entire trip on the I15. As soon as he heard our accents I bet he thought he could take advantage (we’re from England).
